1 BIG HISTORY

David Christian coined the term Big History to describe an innovative history course he began teaching at Macquarie University-Sydney, Australia in 1989.

Big History defines Human History as part of Earth’s History as part of the Universe’s History…not separating Humans from Nature…since they are the same thing…and, in effect, suggesting a Modern Origin Story.

I’m going to repeat…it frames History as a completely intertwined story between Humans and Nature evolving together inextricably…the way it actually really happened and still does.

By approaching the subject of History as an entirely unified construct, from the *Big Bang until today, plus including literally everything within every domain of study together…all the myriad scientific evidence-artifacts-understandings discovered across all scientific disciplines: cosmology, physics, geology, biology, anthropology, psychology…it conveys the essence of what’s really been happening, aka Nature aka Reality, in a much truer way, more so than any other form of History has ever done before. And in this mode, Big History affords a much broader existence context for understanding Ourselves…both our shared Collective Humanity and our very intimately-personal sense of Individual Humanness.

Big History puts Humanity on the continuum of Reality for the very first time ever.

Yet…Humans…in the form of wise homo sapiens…have been on the planet for 300,000 years and recording History since roughly 3400 B.C.E. in Mesopotamia…have just considered co-mingling Human and Natural Histories…along the same timeline…just 36 years ago (as of this 2025 posting).

Yet…36 years beyond David Christian creating this entangled concept and coining its name…along with others like Cynthia Stokes Brown being excited to write all about it…still…hardly anyone’s even heard of it much less adopted it as the undisputed state of reality…nor psychically absorbed it as a life-guiding ontology...aka metaphysics…which might potentially displace a much older, inaccurate, Status-Quo Affirming Origin Story already lurking there.

Ok…you got a sense…now check this out…

The *Big Bang started at the top of your right shoulder…go ahead…feel it with your other hand. Now…while staying focused on your right…stretch it out straight with index finger fully extended. The tip of your right index finger serves as right now…today.

Now…right arm still straight with finger pointed…with your left hand…draw a nail file across your right index nail one time only. The shavings thickness of your right index fingernail represent how long Humans have existed on Earth.

With me so far?

If so, so what?

Perception Error: History is not just Human History…History is Reality’s History.

Imagine for a moment…living your life in a way that openly revealed you only cared about yourself. In every conversational exchange and behavioral gesture you are overtly…decisively…only about you. How long might you last in achieving your objectives?

Like much in life there are profound lessons and universal truths…like this one…to be noticed and absorbed. The comprehensive scope of Reality’s History should always be considered when thinking about absolutely anything…because Reality’s History grounds us Humans in Reality…meaning it reminds and holds our feet to that which is really real…instead of to a story we humans make up….because we like it better…our greatest Achilles Heel!

He’s very happy in his own little world…no one can reach him…and he’s started not eating.

See?

Our default to assume that the only History that matters to us…impacts us…affects us…is only the History during which We have existed is ridiculous and pathetic…because it deceives us at such a fundamental level.

He never leaves his house…and only thinks about himself…he’s obsessed with his thoughts, feelings, expectations, fears, delusions…never talks to anyone else…he’s wasting away before our very eyes.

This deep-seated, root level deception we operate…day-in and out…regarding what our History is…is:

  • 1) not real

  • 2) toxic.

Our Historical Deceit is a huge part of why we are now in the beginnings of a sixth mass extinction that we ourselves have concocted…called the Metacrisis…a multi-pronged wicked problem generated by our own hand which is now actively destroying us due to our perception error about History and more. So our self destruction is due to self-deception…the unshakable perception error we have about ourselves…and all the carbon-capturing, vegetarian dieting, and degrowthing in the world won’t change it…not our perception nor our destruction.

So before we move on to first principle #2, for perception sake, realize that:

  • cyanobacteria is the oldest life form still existing on Earth today, first forming about 3.5b years ago, and is primarily found in Western Australia within layered rock formations. They are still thriving right alongside us long before we got here plus will survive the extinction we won’t.

  • shrews are the oldest known mammalian species, emerging about 225m years ago, which means they overlapped with the dinosaurs who existed 245-66m years ago. The dino’s were a thousand times bigger and way stronger, more violent, but because the shrews were small and could burrow so deep into the Earth’s surface they survived the fifth mass extinction event caused by a wayward asteroid which, upon hitting the Earth, launched one the largest conflagrations our planet had ever endured…thus wiping out all the big, violent predators that dominated everything.

  • all life on Earth evolved from a single-celled organism similar to cyanobacteria or even to the gut organisms that still exist inside every single one our digestive tracts.

  • all life on Earth shares the exact same two DNA base pairs: Adenine (A) / Thymine (T) vs Cytosine (C) / Guanine (G). Please take this one in just a little extra. Literally, every single thing on Earth that is considered to be alive shares the same four fundamental elements, whether it be gut bacteria, an ostrich, a dandelion, or a human. And those four fundamental elements only pair up two-ways…for everything alive on Earth. The only thing responsible for differentiating every species on the planet…any type of mammal, bird, fish, amphibian, plant, tree, insect, arachnid, or anything else you can think of that’s considered alive…is the specific sequence in which these two different base pairs are arranged along a DNA molecule. So please…the next time you cross paths with an ant, cat, duck, wisteria vine, or birch tree…say hello like you mean it…for that matter ask your doctor to give your best to your lab throat culture.

And the last thing of note…

if Humans…through the tool of Big History…now realize we’re so much Younger than anything else in the entire Universe…meaning we’re the Last Species to arrive on Earth by 13.3billion years…

might we be natural candidates for naiveté…possessing a less-seasoned, lesser-informed macro-perspective on the world at large? So maybe rather than thinking we’re so much smarter than any-everything else in the Universe…or how it might all orchestrate together…we might consider there’s something we missed out on in the 13.3 billion years it was all regenerating before us? Not to mention the fact we’re living right beside ourselves…extruded through only two DNA base pairs but extruded through the most amazing algorhithmic-fractacular-kaleidoscope into a gazillion different iterations…and yet, now, in the early 21st century the majority of Humans have no idea about any of this…

He’s wasting away because he’s isolated himself from a world that’s totally interconnected…he missed the part that nothing survives in isolation…he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know…so doom is his only destiny.

Fun Stuff :] grab a typical , blank 8.5x11 print size paper sheet and turn to landscape orientation as you look at it.  At the far right edge make a squiggly and label it ‘BIG BANG’. At the far left make a fat dot and label it ‘NOW’. As close to the fat dot as you can, just to the left of it, draw a tiny vertical tick mark. Underneath the tick mark write: ‘4.4m yrs ago Humans Emerge’. Oh, and over there under ‘BIG BANG’…write ‘13.7b yrs ago’.

Draw all this near the top…you need space below.

2 HUMAN EVOLUTION

Now, imagine the nail shavings thickness…as scraped away by your single stroke of the nail file… magnified up 1,000 times so that that time frame is big enough to appreciate by eye.

Draw Ardi to the farthest left edge.
-Label Ardi as the 4.4m yr old female found in Ethiopia…the oldest known human remains. She’s considered a primate with Human traits…she looked very much like a chimpanzee but walked mostly upright. Anthropologists consider there to be 7 stages of Human Evolution…Ardi is Stage 3, Neanderthal is Stage 6, and Homo Sapien is Stage 7.

To the farthest right edge draw You.

Then draw a line from Ardi to You.

3 PREMODERN VS MODERN

Indigenous vs Western
Humans are integral to Nature vs Humans are Separate from Nature
Holistic Worldview vs Fractured Worldview
Humans as Footnote vs Nature as Footnote

On the long horizontal line that connects Ardi and You…estimate 1685…considered the beginning of The Enlightenment, and make a little vertical tick line.

Now…you can easily envision…comprehend…that everything to the left of that little tick line is when Nature dominated the Earth ubiquitously and unequivocally…Humans were a footnote.

Everything to the left means your zeitgeist was overwhelmed by the vastness of night time’s darkness filled with galaxies of planets-stars-comets…your mental landscape reflected the vast distances between things…no one knew what was on the other side of the ocean…and not even being sure they might fall off the edge if they wandered far enough…top of your mind is the vastness and ubiquity of forests, of myriad nonhuman life forms…ones you encounter regularly because there’s so many more of them than you….including bacteria, arachnids, insects, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, avians…remember you are a spec in all of Nature’s dominance…her complex, shrouded, obscure, impenetrable mystery…therefore you are in a constant state of awe/intrigue or anxiety/horror.

She rules.

In general, you along with your fellow Humans possess a very high level of reverence regarding her Mystical Indomitability due to all the above. She controls you…not the other way around…whether it’s her drought that snuffs your crop so you lose your farm, her lightning strike obliterating your best horse or even your only son, the rattler bite that renders your left hand permanently limp, or the fact you have to drive two days, horse-buggy, to sell your grain…on a likely unnavigable dirt/rock road as no one maintenances it.

To the left of the little tick imagine like today…a world in which Nature is the footnote to Human dominance. The truth is 1950 is more accurate than 1685 for imagining the flip…a mere 75 years out of 13.7b.

Let this sink in, especially knowing that all Your ancestors came from the Premodern period so your DNA is forged much longer in being dominated by Nature than not.

Western Society’s greatest Triumph and Catastrophe

Main points…so much to say…

  • Conquer Nature

  • Declare Nature Nothing but Inert-Dead Matter

  • Compartmentalize-Politicize Knowledge about Nature

  • Declare Humans are Separate and Superior to Everything Else

  • Declare Humans Know All-No More Mysteries or Supernatural

  • Split the World: Heaven vs Earth

  • Split the Mind-Body: Henriques entire realm

Separation of Knowledge into distinct subjects such that it can ‘be studied more thoroughly and uninterruptedly’…the antithesis of witches studies…who knew the interconnectedness of all things.

It also might be time to bring focus the gender of all the activators in the Enlightenment. Yes…there were actually a few women…??, ??, ?? to name a few that you’ve never heard of….but they were not allowed…

all to say that the so identified ‘Enlightenment’ did extremely successfully achieve all the mental landscapes above by roughly the early 1800s and catalyzed great gains for humankind…particularly in physics, biology, and medicine,

Ultimately this period was about males rewriting reality in their likeness…this time scientifically…because they sneered at the Biblical writing that exalted them already.
